In the Visual Arts program at ASAB Arts Department, Universidad Distrital Francisco José de Caldas, there has been born the idea of creating a space for dialogue between art students of different undergraduate programs in the city, with the purpose of presenting papers related to research and creation projects that aim to have an impact in the city of Bogota. This initiative has been producing  student colloquiums since 2008, through an open call sent to all art faculties, with the purpose of making a selection of the best works sent, and a staging of student’s theorical and material proposals. During the first semester of 2010, on the 29th of April, representatives from Universidad Distrital, Universidad Pedagógica Nacional, Universidad Jorge Tadeo Lozano, Universidad Javeriana and Universidad Nacional met at Luis Angel Arango Library, for presenting proposals from different student groups and their work in the city. About 250 local students attended to 12 different student lectures.

What is the purpose and why?

The completion of the Student Colloquium allows the construction of spaces for dialogue between students and teachers from local art faculties and enhances the field of art, while allowing instances of comparison for the projects, new reflections concerning the artistic field and dialogues between different artistic perspectives. A student colloquium is an space for teachers, researchers and students to meet each other, exchange experiences in different work fields around art theory and practice.

Previous versions

So far there have been two other colloquiums, in 2007 and 2008. The first one also took place at Luis Angel Arango Library, and was produced with the support from Jose Ignacio Roca, as Arts Manager at Banco de la Republica (the library is part of the cultural network of the Bank). The second version was supported by Arts Management at Gilberto Alzate Avendaño Foundation, both in the promotion and the funding for the event. For this year, ASAB Arts Department will produce the third version in the first semester of 2010
